Side meetings at the Adelaide Barcode Conference

The final agenda for the Adelaide Barcode Conference will be released this week and you’ll see that it will be a busy week.  Even with all the parallel sessions and evening social events, the organizers had additional requests for meeting rooms.  We’ve organized these into ‘side meetings’ because they won’t be scheduled opposite any plenary or technical sessions so they won’t compete for your attention.  Most of them will be held from 13:00 to 14:00 during the lunch break.  We hope you can eat a quick lunch and go over to the Napier Building, right next door to Bonython Hall where lunch will be served.

Here’s what you’ll find in these side-meetings:

A forum on the application of barcode data will take place during the lunch break on Wednesday in Napier LG24 (13:00-14:00).  The session will be geared toward the interests of government agencies, private companies and non-governmental organizations.

A presentation by Dr. Michael Rhodes, Life Technologies, on “Trends in Sequencing: Implications for the Barcoding Community” in Napier LG29.

A planning meeting for the All-Africa Barcode of Life Conference, proposed for Johannesburg in 2012, will be held during the lunch break on Saturday in Napier 208 (13:00-14:00)

A meeting of people interested in the Australian National Barcode of Life Network on Thursday afternoon in Ligertwood Law Theater

Technical representatives from Life Technologies will hold ‘office hours’ and answer your questions about ABI equipment and other LifeTech products during the lunch break on Wednesday in Napier LG28 (13:00-14:00)

A discussion of recent changes to nomenclatural rules concerning fungi after the close of the Friday afternoon session in Napier 210 (17:30-19:00).

  • The recent International Botanical Congress in Melbourne, Australia ratified several dramatic changes to the formal rules governing the naming of fungi. Among the major changes to the newly named International Code of Nomenclature of Algae, Fungi and Plants are provisions for electronic publication, mandatory registration of new names, the introduction of ‘Lists of Protected Names’, and most dramatically, the abandonment of the dual nomenclature. These changes will be briefly explained, followed by an open discussion of how mycologists can contribute to a smooth and open transition to a new world of fungal nomenclature. This session is organized under the auspices of the International Commission for the Taxonomy of Fungi.
