international online community for dna barcoding professionals
Many members have joined the Connect site but are not sure how to keep in the loop and stay connected. We all have busy lives and probably don't have a lot of time to visit the Connect.BarcodeofLife.net website on a routine basis. Well, there are a number of great ways to stay in the loop with RSS feeds, email follow-ups, and notifications.
Probably the best and most flexible way to keep on top of a wide variety of activities in the Connect site is using RSS. If you already use an RSS reader, such as Google Reader or Feedburner, you know all about RSS. In that case, the main thing you should know is that you can subscribe to almost anything on the Connect site. You can get a feed of the Latest Activity, any specific Group, Discussion Forum or individual thread, or even the activity of a specific member. So whether you want to keep on top when new photos or videos are added, or when new opportunities occur in the barcoding community, all you need to do is subscribe. Check out the explanations and images below.
Subscribing to RSS Feeds
If you aren't familiar with RSS feeds, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't consider using them. In fact, if you use iGoogle or My Yahoo! homepage or a similar tool, then you are already using RSS feeds. To add a Connect.BarcodeofLife.net RSS feed to your reader of choice, simply select the grey RSS icon on the corresponding page (see the orange circle above.)If you aren't familiar with RSS feeds, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't consider using them. Email follow ups also appear throughout the Connect site, particularly in places where people comment, post to a Forum thread or post to the blog. When you come across a topic of interest you can choose to follow the discussion that occurs there. You will then be emailed when any future comments or posts on that topic occur. This is particularly helpful in areas where you have contributed a comment or a post and are interested in what others have to say.
Fine-Tune What Types of Emails You Receive
Email Notifications, available through My Settings on your profile page, is another way to fine tune when you receive emails regarding activity in Connect.
Of course, all of the above is dependent on members contributing to the discussion on Connect. So get in there and start a discussion, post to the blog, respond to a comment. But don't stop there. Subscribe to the areas of the site that interest you through RSS, email following and notifications. This will keep you in the know and make Connect a more engaging site for everyone.
