Perhaps during the discussion we can ask audience members who aren't already involved with education what it is they feel is stopping them. A straw poll of sorts. I look forward to hearing more about eBOL.

I hadn't heard of scistarter, but it looks cool from the link, but I fear will only attract those scientists actively looking to mentor and in my experience they are few and far between and the barcoding community is small. Most scientists…

Hi Bryony, Thanks for this suggestion. In my talk I am going to try and review some of the many different ways that people fit education into their projects, but as you point out it would also be good to discuss the real and perceived barriers to…

Hey Karen- Since we are at this conference, it would be interesting to find out about the willingness of the scientific barcoding community to work with students or citizen scientists and what sorts of commitments they could make. On discussion with…

Thanks for the invitation! This should be fruitful as I am gearing up to barcode some new shrimp species (hopefully). Cheers!

Hello and welcome Karen!

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me in Mexico City, and thank you for diving in and getting started on the network. I see that you have been adding some apps to your page and kicking the tires on Ning. That's great! I hope to hear what you think of it and which apps you find the most helpful.

As host, I am contacting everyone to suggest a few things that you can do to take advantage of our online community, many of which you have already begun to do.

Simple Things You Can Do

After completing your online profile you should add yourself to the member map – this adds a geographic location to each community member.
A great next step is to invite your colleagues and search our members for people you know and invite them to be your colleague on the network.
Another thing to do is to browse our Forum and ask a question or leave a comment.
Please join a Group or start your own, as groups are a great way to express your special interest, be it a taxonomic group, a regional or organizational affiliation.
Have a question? Ask one of our hosts or post it to our FAQ page.

Some Advanced Things You Can Do

If you have something to say, start a Blog. Simply choose “Add a Blog Post” under Blogs. Blogging has never been easier.
If you already have a blog or another online resource, you can share it either on your profile page or through our rss pages. Just ask me how.
Manage a Group! Create a group and invite colleagues to join the network and your group. Use the “Send Message to Group” feature to email everyone in your group, start discussion threads specific to your group’s interests, add widgets and more.

For assistance with any of the things please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Again, thank you for joining our growing online community for barcoders. I look forward to connecting with you soon.

-Matthew Fisher
