Connect.BarcodeofLife.net

international online community for dna barcoding professionals

One of the biggest goals of the Community Network is to share information among barcoders, and information about lab protocols is a very high priority. If you have documents that describe the protocols you use in your lab, or short instructional videoclips that show how to do a particular step in the lab, I hope you will consider uploading them to this group. We will organize them into a filing and retrieval system.

What do you all think of this idea?

it's a great idea - implementation (ease of use and power of the filing/retrieving system) will determine ultimate success - if it is easily searchable, browsable and somehow keyworded or cross-indexed, then should be great. if it is just a collection of protocols that have a title given by the submitter, then perhaps less useful. Is this replacing the LLN Wiki portal?

The LLN wiki portal, also known as the BOLI Handbook, was created with Mediawiki (or is it Wikimedia?) by CBOL's former web contractor. If we get a lot of content from people we can consider using it or another content management system. Until we reach the point of being overloaded with content (a problem I'd like to have!), I think we will use this Community Network system. It has the advantage of giving easy access to community members.

Hi there,
i found the "BOLI Handbook Wiki Resource Submission Page", but no database where i can search for protocols and related data. Is this still "work in progress" or did I miss the right link? It would also be some asset to be able to cite or reference papers and make comments on the reproduction of certain results.
Thomas
After constructing the Wiki Resource Submission Page we were unsuccessful in getting labs and people to contribute content. We will be constructing what we hope will be a more heavily used knowledgebase. The idea is to use Connect as the mechanism for identifying the information that people want and then fill those needs in a more targeted way.

We hope to hold a webinar during which people on Connect can send in their quiestion and requests for information resources. We would then use this user-driven information to construct the knowledgebase, rather than offering information that providers have whether or not people want it.

Hi David,
is or was there a "Resource Browsing Page"? A place where the contributers can see how their information is presented and what one can do with it?
What were the reasons for people and labs not to contribute content?

Thomas
I think this is a great idea - it would help answer my new discussion thread. We're in the process of preparing our experiences of doing barcoding in a small lab in Indonesia and I'd be happy to share information with people.

I read this stuff but it has been years since I have done anything like this.

We are in a unique position of having benefactors that want to shower us with money.  We really want to do the barcode of life project but I have no idea where to start.  I want to do the entire process so that my students will know how to do this and work on the barcoding.

So what are the techniques and what equipment do we need to have.

Thanks
