 Laboratory Technician

 

The New York Botanical Garden, a National Historic Landmark and one of NYC’s premier cultural institutions, seeks a full-time Laboratory Technician to join their Science Department.               

 

Summary of Responsibilities:

 

The Laboratory Technician will conduct DNA barcoding studies on plants by developing and applying molecular tools. Collect and analyze DNA barcode data, curate DNA and tissue collections, curate barcode sequence data (requires working knowledge of plant taxonomy), maintain laboratory records, prepare reagents, and demonstrate barcoding techniques to visiting researchers.

 

  • Maintain laboratory records and insure data integrity.
  • Conduct standard protocols for DNA barcoding including high throughput DNA extraction, PCR, and automated DNA sequencing.
  • Assist in developing new molecular markers and techniques specific to on-going DNA barcode projects.
  • Process raw DNA sequences into finished BARCODE records and conduct analyses of barcode sequence data to ensure data consistency.
  • Teach visiting researchers DNA barcoding techniques.
  • Conduct literature searches for laboratory and analytic techniques.

 

Requirements:

 

  • BS/BA in Botany, Biology, Plant Biology, or related field required. MS or higher preferred.
  • Experience with the application of molecular approached to systematics.
  • Experience with the methods of phylogenetic and biogeographic analysis.
